GFCI Won't Reset At All? What That Really Means

First, don't force it

If you press RESET and nothing happens, the temptation is to press harder or repeatedly. You're probably not doing it wrong - a GFCI that won't reset is telling you something specific.

Step 1: Confirm there's power to the outlet at all

A GFCI needs incoming power to reset. Check the breaker for that circuit, check for a nearby disconnect (common for hot tubs or well pumps), and try a lamp in a different outlet on the same circuit.

Step 2: Rule out a downstream fault

One GFCI often protects several outlets downstream. Unplug everything from the GFCI outlet and everything it protects downstream, then try RESET again with nothing connected. If it resets now, plug things back in one at a time to find the culprit.

Step 3: Consider the GFCI's age

If the device is more than 10-15 years old, or has spent years outdoors or in a damp area, age-related failure is a real possibility.

Step 4: Check for a wiring mistake, especially after any recent work

If the GFCI worked fine and suddenly won't reset right after nearby electrical work, a wire may have gotten connected to the wrong terminal - line and load reversed, most commonly.

When to stop and call someone

Go straight to an electrician if the GFCI won't reset even with everything unplugged and the breaker confirmed on, if there's any heat or discoloration, or if the problem started after water exposure.

Bottom line

A GFCI that flat-out won't reset is doing exactly what it's designed to do when there's a real fault present. Work through power, downstream devices, and age in that order, and don't be afraid to hand it off once you've ruled out the easy stuff.
