Multimeter Basics: The Four Measurements a Homeowner Actually Uses
A $30 multimeter answers questions the beeping pen can't — but most owners never learn the four settings that matter. Here's voltage, continuity, resistance, and battery testing, taught the way apprentices learn it.

- Never measure resistance or continuity on an energized circuit — it's wrong at best and meter-destroying at worst.
- Buy a meter with a real safety category rating (CAT II 300V minimum for household work) from a real brand — the $8 mystery meter's fuse protection is a rumor.

Why graduate from the beeping pen
The non-contact tester answers one question: is something hot near here? The multimeter answers the follow-ups: how many volts, exactly where, and is this wire/cord/fuse/battery actually intact inside? For the price of a decent drill bit set, it turns "I think the cord's bad" into knowledge. Four measurements cover 95% of household use — learn these and ignore the rest of the dial for now.
Setup that prevents 90% of confusion
- Black probe → COM jack. Red probe → the V/Ω jack. (The other jack, marked 10A or similar, is for current measurements you won't be making — red probe there causes the classic blown-fuse/short mishap.)
- Auto-ranging meter: turn the dial to the kind of measurement; the meter handles magnitude.
- The symbols: V~ (AC volts — house power), V⎓ (DC volts — batteries), Ω (resistance), soundwave/diode symbol (continuity — the beeper).
Measurement 1: AC voltage — "is it live, and is it right?"
Dial to V~. At an outlet: red probe in the small slot, black in the large slot — steady hands, fingers behind the guards, one hand in your pocket if you're new to this. Expect 110–125V. Uses: confirming a circuit is truly dead before work (after your NCVT ritual), confirming an outlet is weak/dead, checking what a mystery switch kills. Readings that are way off — 60V, 138V, zero-when-the-pen-beeps — are exactly the documented clues electricians wish every caller had.
Measurement 2: Continuity — the beeper (my most-used setting)
Dial to the soundwave symbol; touch the probes together — it beeps, meaning "these two points connect." Now, on dead/unplugged things only, test whether electricity could flow:
- Extension cords: probe pin to matching far-end hole. Beep = that conductor's intact; silence = broken inside (wiggle the cord while testing to catch intermittents — deeply satisfying).
- Fuses (car, appliance, old-style house): beep = good, silence = blown. Ends the squint-at-the-tiny-wire game.
- Light bulbs (incandescent), heating elements, switches (beep in ON, silence in OFF — a dead switch fails this instantly).
Continuity turns "maybe it's the cord?" into a ten-second verdict.
Measurement 3: Resistance (Ω) — continuity's quantitative cousin
Same rule — dead circuits only. Where continuity says connected or not, resistance says how well: a heating element reading tens of ohms is healthy, one reading infinite is broken, and a cord reading 5 ohms where it should read near zero has damage adding resistance (and heat, in use). You'll use it less than the beeper, but it settles arguments the beeper can't.
Measurement 4: DC voltage — the battery clinic
Dial to V⎓, probes across the battery: AA/AAA healthy above ~1.3V, dead below 1.2; 9V smoke-detector batteries below ~8.5V are done; the car battery at 12.6V rested is happy, at 12.0 is sulking. Two minutes with the junk-drawer battery pile pays for the meter in un-thrown-away good batteries alone.
Buying it
A CAT II 300V-rated (or better) auto-ranging digital meter from Klein, Fluke, Southwire, Milwaukee, or similar: $25–60. The category rating is genuine safety engineering (internal protection against surges while you're connected); the mystery-brand $9 meter economizes exactly there. Buy once, keep it next to the voltage pen, and let the two of them make you the neighbor people call first — armed, now, with actual measurements.
📞 When to call a professional
The meter is for answering questions — is this dead, is this cord broken, is this battery good — not for licensing new work. Confusing readings, unexpected live circuits, and anything inside the panel remain professional territory. Bring the pro your measurements; they'll love you for it.

Auto-ranging vs manual — what should I buy?
Auto-ranging, without question, for a homeowner: you pick WHAT to measure (volts AC, continuity), the meter picks the range. Manual-ranging meters are cheaper and fine for people who use them weekly; they're one more way to get a confusing reading for everyone else.
What do the V-with-wavy-line and V-with-straight-line symbols mean?
Wavy (V~ or VAC) is alternating current — house wiring, outlets: expect ~120V. Straight/dashed (V⎓ or VDC) is direct current — batteries, car electrical, low-voltage electronics. Measuring an outlet on the DC setting reads near zero and confuses everyone; matching the setting to the source is half of multimeter competence.
What's a normal outlet reading?
Hot-to-neutral: 110–125V (nominal 120). Hot-to-ground: about the same. Neutral-to-ground: a few volts at most. Significantly low, high, or weird combinations (like 60V readings — often a lost connection 'floating') are findings worth an electrician's attention — written down, they make the service call efficient.
