Smart Switches vs. Smart Bulbs: Which Should You Choose?
Smart switches and smart bulbs both let you control lights from your phone, but they solve different problems and have different wiring requirements. I'll walk through how each one actually works so you can figure out which fits your house instead of buying the wrong thing twice.

The Short Answer
If you want the light to always work the normal way too (someone flips the switch and it turns on, no app needed), go with a smart switch. If you just want to experiment with color-changing bulbs or don't want to touch your wiring at all, go with smart bulbs. I've installed both in my own house and in a lot of customers' houses, and the decision usually comes down to wiring, not preference.
How Smart Switches Work
A smart switch replaces the physical switch on the wall. It's wired into your existing electrical box, and it controls power to whatever's on that circuit - usually a ceiling fixture, but sometimes an outlet. Because it's hardwired, the switch works exactly like your old one: someone walks in, flips it, light comes on. No phone required, no app confusion for guests or kids. The smart part is added on top - scheduling, voice control, dimming, grouping with other switches.
The catch is wiring. Most smart switches need a neutral wire in the switch box, and a lot of older homes (especially anything built before the late 1990s in Oregon) don't have one at the switch - the neutral was only run to the fixture. If you open your switch box and see just two black wires plus a ground, you likely don't have a neutral, and you'll need a switch model designed for no-neutral setups, or you'll need one added.
How Smart Bulbs Work
A smart bulb screws into a regular fixture and does its own thing - it has a tiny radio and driver circuit built into the base. You control it from an app or a hub, and it can dim, change color temperature, or in some cases full RGB color. Nothing about your house wiring changes.
The big weakness: the physical wall switch has to stay on all the time for the bulb to respond to the app. If someone in your house flips the switch off out of habit (and someone always does), the bulb loses power and can't be controlled again until the switch is flipped back on. That's the single most common smart bulb complaint I hear from homeowners.
Where Each One Makes Sense
Smart bulbs are the easier starting point - no electrical work, works in rentals, good for one or two fixtures you want to play with. They're also the only real option for lamps and portable fixtures.
Smart switches make more sense for rooms where the whole household needs to use the light normally, for multi-bulb fixtures (one switch controls all the bulbs at once instead of pairing each bulb individually), and for any fixture where you don't want people accidentally cutting power to a $30 smart bulb.
Cost and Setup Reality
A basic smart bulb is often cheaper up front than a smart switch, but if a fixture has four bulbs, you're paying four times over - a single smart switch controlling that same fixture is usually the better value. Smart switches also need a bit more setup time since you're working with line voltage, but the day-to-day experience is smoother for anyone who isn't tech-savvy.
When to Call a Pro
Swapping a switch you know has a neutral wire is a reasonable DIY job for someone comfortable with basic electrical work. But if you open the box and aren't sure what you're looking at, or you find only two wires and no neutral, that's the point to stop and call a licensed electrician - guessing wrong here can damage the smart switch or, worse, create a fire hazard from an improper neutral workaround.

Can I use smart bulbs if I don't have a neutral wire at my switch?
Yes - that's actually the main advantage of smart bulbs. Since they get power through the existing fixture wiring, they don't care whether your switch box has a neutral.
Will my smart switch work if the power goes out and comes back on?
Most smart switches reconnect to your Wi-Fi or hub automatically within a minute or two, and the physical switch still works immediately even before it reconnects.
Can I mix smart switches and smart bulbs in the same house?
Absolutely, and most smart homes end up doing exactly that - switches in main living spaces, bulbs in lamps and accent fixtures.
Do smart switches work with three-way circuits (two switches controlling one light)?
Some do, but they require a companion switch or specific wiring at both locations - check the compatibility before buying, since not every smart switch supports three-way setups.
