Bathrooms Are Their Own Category — Treat Them That Way
More comeback calls happen on bathroom remodels than almost any other room, mostly because guys treat bathroom wiring like a smaller version of a bedroom circuit. It's not. NEC carves out specific rules for bathrooms because of the water and grounding exposure, and the requirements are tighter than most other rooms in the house.
The Receptacle Circuit: 210.11(C)(3)
Bathrooms need at least one 20-amp branch circuit to supply the bathroom receptacle outlet(s). That circuit can serve receptacles in a single bathroom only, or it can serve multiple bathrooms with no other outlets on it — but the moment you put a bathroom receptacle on a general lighting circuit with bedroom or hallway outlets, you're out of compliance. I still run into 1990s houses where the previous electrician tied the bathroom GFCI into a hall lighting circuit, and every bathroom remodel is an opportunity to correct it even if it's not the primary scope of work.
GFCI: 210.8(A)(1)
All 125-volt, 15- and 20-amp receptacles in bathrooms require GFCI protection, no exceptions. This has been settled code language for a long time, but I still see whirlpool tub motor receptacles or vanity light "convenience" outlets that got missed because they weren't part of the original rough-in scope.
Receptacle Placement: 210.52(D)
At least one receptacle is required within 3 feet of the outside edge of each basin, and it has to be on a wall or partition adjacent to the basin, or installed on the side or face of the cabinet no more than 12 inches below the countertop. Double-vanity bathrooms trip people up here — if the basins are far enough apart, you may need two receptacles, not one centrally located outlet trying to cover both.
Exhaust Fans — Not NEC, But Don't Skip It
Bathroom exhaust ventilation isn't governed by the NEC directly — it falls under the IRC/IMC (typically M1507 in the residential code) and local energy code amendments. That said, as the electrician you're usually the one pulling the circuit and often installing the fan, so know your jurisdiction's minimum exhaust rate (commonly 50 CFM intermittent or 20 CFM continuous for a standard bathroom) and whether a humidity-sensing or timer control is required locally. A fan with no operable window in the bathroom is frequently mandatory under the residential code even if nobody flags it on the electrical permit.
Luminaire Clearance Around Tubs and Showers: 410.10(D)
This is the rule I see violated most in remodels, especially when a homeowner wants a pendant or chandelier over a freestanding tub. NEC 410.10(D) prohibits luminaires, paddle fans, and similar equipment within a zone measured 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold, unless the fixture is rated for damp or wet locations as appropriate and, in the case of a hydromassage tub, GFCI protected. That 3-foot horizontal measurement is taken from the tub or shower's outside edge, not the wall — a lot of guys measure from the wall and end up too close.
Recessed shower lights need to be listed for wet locations if inside the shower enclosure itself, and any switch controlling that light needs to be located outside the tub/shower space unless it's part of a listed assembly rated for the location.
Bonding and Grounding Note
Metal bathtubs, whirlpool motors, and any metal piping systems bonded per 250.104 still apply in bathroom remodels — don't assume a plastic tub means no bonding concerns if there's metal supply piping or a metal drain assembly involved.
Field Note
On remodels, always check the existing circuit the bathroom is tied to before you touch anything. I've found bathroom receptacles daisy-chained off kitchen small-appliance circuits, garage circuits, even an exterior circuit — none of which meet 210.11(C)(3), and all of which become your responsibility to flag once you're in the wall.
